After the Riqueval Canal inferno, Durant’s company splinters. Shielded by British cavalrymen, they escape into the night and falling snow, while the Red Maiden’s legion of dead men give chase. They run south toward St. Quentin, and the promise of a barge, waiting in the river, that might carry them to Verdun’s fortress. But as night takes hold, new forces rise and join the hunt, the deeds of their pasts continue haunting every step, and the nightmare continues––an apocalyptic reckoning, inexorable, intent on devouring them all.
